The 2024 summer Olympics have come to an end and The United States of America is on top of the medal count.
The USA brought home over 100 medals from the 2024 summer Olympics. Their top events included track and field, gymnastics and swimming.
The track was where the USA racked up their gold medals, winning a total of 14. Not only did the athletes win medals, a few of them set world records.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone beat her own record for the 6th time in the Women’s 400m hurdles with 50.37 seconds. The mixed 4x400m relay team also broke a record with 3:07:41, smashing Poland’s record by about two seconds.
In the gymnastics arena, the women showed their colors, especially star Simone Biles, who won two gold and a silver in individual competitions and one gold with her team. The men’s team also made great achievements as its members won teammates many bronze medals.
The USA won eight gold medals with their athletes in swimming. Five of these medals were won by individual athletes, while the other three were won in team competition.
Other popular events where the country’s athletes won many medals include basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The USA also won medals in smaller events such as cycling, fencing and golf. They also won bronze in the new Olympic event, Breaking.
America was not the only country in the spotlight as France hosted the events in its capital. The Paris Olympics had some ups and downs. While the opening ceremony was an amazing performance, the performance of the Olympic Village was not.
The opening ceremony started with the passing of the torch, where it passed though each of France’s 64 territories, and was carried by both everyday French civilians and celebrities such as Snoop Dogg. The torch was followed by each country’s team floating down the River Seine in a boat, making it the first ever Olympic ceremony to not be held within a stadium.
The Olympic Village had its rough spots with its uncomfortable eco-friendly beds, which led to countries relocating their athletes into nearby hotels. Controversy was also sparked over the food supply being unable to meet athletes’ nutrition needs, though the chocolate muffins were a big hit as many athletes raved about them.
If your Olympic appetite is still churning, have no fear. There is more great competition on the horizon as
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be hosted by Italy in Milan while the USA will be hosting the 2028 summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
