As teenagers get older and start to take on more responsibility, many of us want to get a job to start earning money. Being a teen can be expensive, so in order to hangout with our friends and do fun activities, we have to get a job to support our lifestyle. While many teenagers work in high school, you may be wondering if it’s time for you to apply to that job.
Research shows that working a job as a teenager has many benefit. The most obvious benefit is earning money.
Having your own money to spend offers teenagers a tangible reward. From earning to spending, to saving. you can learn important lessons in money management. You learn good time management skills and organization. You learn important communication skills and how to work with a team. Lastly, you also learn how to take initiative and work independently. These are all important skills and can be taken with you in the adult working world.
However, there are some cons to having a job when being a young adult, like the addition of unnecessary stress on top of being a student. So be sure not to overwork yourself when having a job in high school.
Senior Raegan Nottingham works at Jimmy Johns. Raegan works at Jimmy Johns because she wants money and all of her friends work here. Raegan stated, “I don’t really like it because I don’t enjoy making sandwiches.” Raegan is the perfect example for most teenagers because most of us choose a job to make money and will pick it if we can work with our friends there.
Senior Mary VanNess works at Frigid Frog & More in Plainfield. She scoops ice cream and makes shaved ice for people. Mary says, “A lot of families come in to enjoy the activities around the building. I enjoy meeting new people and getting to see the kids excited for ice cream.” Mary plans on continuing to work in the summer until she goes to college since she just started working in November.
Senior Alison Bowers works at HillTop Daycare. Ali watches kids from ages 6 months to 5 years old. She just recently started working at the center, but really likes it so far. Ali says, “It is really fun to watch them grow and be a part of their everyday lives.”
If you don’t have a job and have been thinking about getting one or making a little money so that you can buy you some extra things, the options for jobs in the area is pretty wide open. The benefits of having a job now are more than just financial. It is great practice for the future.
