The Mighty Cadets spell bowl team is back at it again and is already seeing great success.
The team is led once again by Ms. Paradise, who has nothing but good things to say about the team. “I expect great things this year. We have mostly a new team since we graduated over half of our seniors last year. A team has at least 10 people on it, and seven of our spellers are new this year! But they are doing great and we look forward to going to the state competition again this year,” said Paradise.
The team is anchored by senior Vianna McKinney, who was an individual finalist last year at state. Joining her are juniors Kirstyn Marcum, Isabelle Vieting, Mady Hawkins and Kyler Effner.
The spellers are very strong this year, which is good, because so is the competition.
According to Paradise, “Our biggest competitor in our class is North Posey High School. The state competition is not by class, though, and the three schools at the top last year were Terre Haute South, Roncalli and Penn High School. They are almost always the top three schools.”
The team received first place in Hendricks county and recently won the Spellapalooza Invitational, where Effner and Marcum both finished with near-perfect rounds.
Since then, the team has been busy at work preparing for the rest of the season.
“Our next competition will be Area on October 30th. That is hosted here at Cascade in the PAC. Area is the state qualifier, so we hope to knock it out of the park so we can go to Purdue on November 11th,” said Paradise.
With such a strong start, the team is in great shape to get back to the glory of the state finals.
