Summer is at its peak, it’s Friday night and the sun is still scorching in the sky late into the evening. While most students are packing the stands during the football game, the girls golf team athletes are putting their sweat and all their hard work not onto field, but on the golf course.
This fall, while all eyes were on the football team, the girl’s golf team worked hard personally and as a team to have incredible accomplishments this season.
“Every single player on the team, at some point in the season, shot their best score they have every shot and that was something awesome to see for them to accomplish,” said coach Caleb Eldridge.
This year was Eldridge’s first year coaching the team. Although some credit for their new success could be due to the new coach, Eldridge says, “All the credit goes to the players for that improvement. They have put in the work at practice and sometimes even outside of practice to improve their game over the course of the season.”
Another new addition to the team, sophomore Riese Myers said that, “The team atmosphere is very supportive and encouraging. The girls on the team made me feel welcome even though I was new to the sport.”
The overall abundance of perseverance, hard work and positive attitudes was a recipe for success this year. “Everyone wanted to do well and had competitiveness about them, but they never lost sight of enjoying the time they were out there,” said Eldridge.
The team finished an outstanding 2nd at conference and 7th in sectionals. Peaking at the end of the season, their best score was at the sectional round. They even set a record of 7-2 in their 9-hole matches.
Leading the squad were senior Neveah Hubner and junior Jess Andres. Hubner was a conference medalist with a personal best score of 86 and Andres joined her in all-conference honors.
“I am really glad I decided to put in my name for the girls golf coaching position and I will always be grateful that this will always be my first team,” said Eldridge.
