Anyone who has been in her class knows…the 100 Word Challenge is a big deal in Ms. Bauer’s class.
Now, I know what you’re thinking…challenge? More like torture. So, how about I tell you some things and after reading this, you can decide.
As vocab units go, this is pretty straightforward. And it can be easy, but can also be very difficult if you don’t take it seriously.
This has been a well-loved…and hated…unit in Bauer’s years at CHS. And it will most likely be here for the future.
These 100 words are split up into four different sets of 25 words. The list goes alphabetically, which makes remembering these words much easier. Students receive a new packet of words every week, which typically contains bell work and homework for each night.
The work that is given in the packets isn’t very hard and is simply there to try and get you to remember the words better. You will get a practice test the day before the official test and if you get a 100% on the practice you don’t have to take the one for a grade the next day.
If you can get a perfect score on every test or practice, you will not have to take the final at the end of the unit. If you really try on these packers and study, you will receive good, easy grades.
You may think there is no reasoning behind these words and Bauer does these to just to make the lives of her students miserable. But there is more to it.
With the PSAT and SAT looming each year, these words are high level words that students will likely see on these tests. So Bauer does her best to try and prepare you for these so you have a familiarity with them.
The SAT is not the only reason for this unit.
According to Bauer, “These words are common. And even if they never become part of your everyday vocabulary, when other people use them, you will know what they mean.”
And believe it or not, there is even ,ore to the madness behind her method.
“This unit requires a lot of repetition and really shows students how to be organized. The smaller lessons give students a chance to get used to a way of studying that benefits them in all of their courses if they use it,” said Bauer.
No matter what you truly feel about it, you have to try because it’s very easy to study hard and try to get your work done and doing that you can boost your grade very easily. and whether you are a current sophomore or a 100-word survivor, everyone has an opinion on this unit.
Some people think there isn’t a point since they won’t use these words later on. Some say it is important it helped them and it was easy grades.
No matter how you look at it, just make sure you take this unit seriously because it can benefit you or truly hurt you. So if you’re reading this as a younger student, make sure you can be prepared to take this 100 word challenge whenever the time comes or maybe if you’re older take some time to reflect back on this and really think about if it did help you.
