Did you know in Indiana, 92% of students admit to using their phones during class in one way or another? And let’s be honest; most of them are distracting.
To help students and teachers avoid such distractions this year, Ms. White, the assistant principal, has implemented a new cell phone policy.
“The staff at Cascade High School want our students to be successful both here at school and after they graduate,” Ms. White said.
In an effort to minimize the disruptions caused by the devices, students must place their phones in a caddy when entering the classroom and are not to retrieve them until the end of class.
Senior Alison Bowers says, “ I think the phone policy could be helpful because sometimes students get too distracted by them. I think it will be good to have a break for a little bit to really focus in class.”
Many students worry they won’t be able to contact their parents in case of an emergency. If you are worried of an emergency to contact your parents, the school has all emergency contact information.
Senior Raegan Nottingham said, “I don’t think it’s effective for learning. It makes kids even more distracted because it makes them more eager to get on their phones.”
This will be a lot different for people and it will be a hard change for most. Ms. White stated “Although we are only couple of weeks into the school year, already I have received some positive feedback on the plan.”
So proving the point that we CAN live without our phones a bit has been made. Time will tell if it makes a difference academically.
