Making its debut on September 6, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has produced mixed feelings among viewers.
This horror-comedy is being distributed by Warner Brothers and it has made 332.9 million dollars at the box office. The sequel’s length is an hour and 44 minutes and takes place thirty-six years after the first film. It is rated as PG-13 for some adult language.
The film was well received by critics, being rated 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, 80% by Fandango and 7 out of 10 on IMDb. Rotten Tomatoes mentioned that there were too many jokes and callbacks to the first movie. They also mention that the plot as a whole felt stale.
The show focuses on Lydia’s poor relationship with her daughter Astrid, which leads Astrid to become trapped in the Netherworld. It also has another plot point in which Beetlejuice’s ex wife tries to steal his soul.
These different plots led to the overarching theme, but overall the story felt rushed and somewhat incomplete. The film also included CGI during the possession parts causing it to feel less human compared to the first film.
Although the film’s plot struggles at certain points, there are some redeeming qualities in well-written moments, especially silly jokes. It also entices audiences with different nostalgic parts that relate back to the first movie such as the Banana Boat song by Harry Belafonte.
A few familiar faces returned to make appearances in the film, including Winona Ryder as Lydia, Catherine O’Hara and Micheal Keaton as Beelejuice. Sadly Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, who played the beloved Barbra and Adam Maitland, do not return for the sequel.
One of the new faces of the film is Jenna Ortega, who plays Astrid Deetz. Her casting has enticed many young horror fans to the film as she has previously starred in Wednesday, and the Scream Franchise,
