The Cascade Cadets softball team had a successful season last year, and it looks like they are still riding that wave.
The team is coached by the experienced Brett Taber, who is in his 22nd year coaching the sport. He was previously at Mooresville from 1985 to 2004. In just his second year at Cascade, Taber finds this team ready for another whirlwind season.
After a heartbreak of a season ender in the semi-state in extra innings, the team looks to replace some key players with the help of the returning starters and underclassmen.
A few of these players include senior Vayla Mnsfield and juniors Ava Allen and Grace Gray, who led the team in batting average last season. The lefty is a great team leader according to Taber and said she is an even harder worker.
The team has many goals for this season and are off to a great start. They recently won the Terre Haute South Invite and dropped 4A powerhouse Avon over the weekend.
With back-to-back conference championships under their belt, the first target is a threepeat in Cascade’s final year of the conference.
That is not the team’s only goal however, as they have big expectations for the postseason. After just missing the state finals last year, the goal is to advance and bring home the first championship in school history.
Gray, who is already committed to Ball State, is a stud on the mound, but gets solid backup from sophomore lefty Lacie Godby and freshman Caitlin Gryszowka. Providing consistent infield defense is sophomore Suzy Moore at third base. Fellow soph Macey Pugh is a force to be dealt with at the plate and in the outfield.
With such a young team led by solid leadership, Taber thinks the improved schedule will give them more competitive games to prepare them for the playoffs.
