Track season up and running
April 11, 2023
This years’ track season is looking strong, with a lot of new faces and powerful elements to make this season special.
The 2023 track team has a new coach in Greg Williams. He recently coached the middle school track team, and has come to the high school to continue a strong tradition.
Something new to track this year is the “Track Team Anchor” program, which is the leadership development group which helps guide and shape the team for the season. Part of that vision was to decide on the “One Word” for the year which will be our focus point. For 2023, the word is “united.”
The team has already been kicking it this year with their first indoor meet on March 4th. This jump started the season with a senior Owen Myers placing 2nd with a high jump of 13’0″ and ranked 4th place for indoor state.
Junior Gavin Weakley is current ranked 15th with a high jump of 5’10”, junior Claire Austin placed 4th in pole vault with a 7’6″ jump and is currently ranked 25th.
The 4×800 of Myers, seniors Braydan Fishel and Evan Davis and freshman Dean Semski placed 4th and are currently ranked 25th. Junior Mara Starika placed 8th in the 60m hurdles and is currently ranked 34th.
The team recently attended a retreat where they focused on establishing SMART goals. One of those goals for this year is to win conference for both boys and girls. They still have a lot of work to do, but they have a very talented group of athletes and this is certainly an achievable goal for the 2023 season.
“One of my personal goals for this year is that we come together as a team, not just groups (sprints, distance, throws, or jumps) but one group that supports each other. This is how we will achieve our larger team goals,” said Coach Williams.
Overall, this track season, and the team itself, is in great shape for the season. They are putting in the hard work and dedication to fulfill themselves, the coach, and the team as a whole.
